What is Moral Truth?

I truly didn’t realize there was so much confusion over this question. One glance on Google, shows me that isn’t the case. It seems crazy, but in today’s world there are many that believe all things are relative—even truth. What do you mean, you ask?

absolute truthThere are different types of truth.

Here’s the first type of truth.

I like lemon pie, well, lemon almost anything. To me it is the best pie. Is that truth? Well, it is to me, but it may not be to you. You might think chocolate pie is the best pie. That could be your truth. So what kind of truth is this? It is a subjective truth. It is personal, individual, and private. That simply means that some things are truth for one person and not for another.

There is also a second type of truth.

If you have no air or water, you will not live. This is what is called an objective truth. If water reaches a certain temperature, it freezes. It is unchanging no matter the circumstances. If you prevent a living human from taking in oxygen or water, you will die. No matter what. Water will freeze at a certain temperature, no matter what.

absolute truthHopefully you now have a good handle on subjective vs. objective truth. Let’s go one step further. When it comes to morals, are they subjective or objective? Does moral truth depend on our circumstances? Many like to change the word subjective to relative and objective to absolute when discussing morals for some reason. I’ll play along.

People who believe in relative moral truth think that moral truth or rules are like pie. They believe that moral truth depends on the person or group and what they like. It has more to do with personal relationships and heart. It’s about personal and group preferences. This leads to the idea that anything goes and nothing is wrong when given the right circumstance. This truth is dependent on the individual. It is personal and often private.  Questions of right and wrong behavior are relative. Everyone decides for him or herself what is right.

Those who believe in absolute moral truth believe that moral truth is unchanging despite what anyone believes. No matter what your circumstances and your personal relationships, the truth remains the truth.

Well, here’s the truth of the matter (Did you get that? Truth of the matter? Ha) according to me….Oh, no, I mean, the absolute or objective truth of things…so not according to me. These things are true no matter what.absolute truth

  • Evil is real.
  • There is a devil and there is a God.
  • There is sin and it is not dependent on circumstances. A sin is a sin is a sin.
  • We will never be forced to do what’s right because we have free will.
  • We can all receive forgiveness for our sins.
  • Our time on earth is a time for us to grow and learn and become.
  • We are of infinite worth and have intrinsic value.
  • God loves us.
  • We are God’s children.
  • Justice must be satisfied.
  • Mercy is a gift we can all claim.
  • Happiness is a mindset.

And I could go on and on.

absolute truth

I have always known that there is absolute moral truth. It is a gift I’ve been given and I’m so grateful for that. And for those who struggle, I’m here to tell you, what is right is always right and nothing will make it wrong. And what is wrong is always wrong and never right.

It can be hard to understand those words in a world that heralds relative truth above the absolutes. In a world that tries to make you believe that evil is good and good is evil. I’m here to tell you it is not. It doesn’t matter if a situation pulls at your heartstrings or tugs at your intellectual prowess.

And here’s the truth too…

absolute truth

We can believe in absolute truth and still love everyone. We can believe in absolute truth and still have free will. We can believe in absolute truth and have total freedom. Freedom comes from not allowing ourselves to be in bondage to anything.

Don’t let yourself be lulled into a relative life with relative truth and the chaos it inspires. You are important and valued and loved just as you are. That is the truth. Absolute truths are anchors that lead to peace and security.

Simply grab hold.
